VdB 4 & Sail Boat ClusterVdB 4 e Ammasso Barca a Vela

VdB 4 is a reflection nebula located in the constellation Cassiopeia, roughly 2,000–2,100 light-years from Earth. Its characteristic bluish glow isn't light of its own making: it's the light of a hot, young star embedded within the cloud of gas and dust, scattered by the surrounding particles — the same principle that makes Earth's sky appear blue.

The nebula lies within a particularly rich and photogenic region of the sky, dominated by extensive dark clouds of interstellar dust that weave through the diffuse glow, creating a striking contrast between bright and shadowed areas. The same field also contains the open star cluster NGC 225, informally nicknamed the "Sailboat Cluster" for the arrangement of its stars, which resembles a small sailing boat.

Catalogued by Canadian astronomer Sidney van den Bergh in his well-known catalogue of reflection nebulae, VdB 4 is a relatively under-photographed target compared to other, more famous objects — which makes it a particularly rewarding find for deep-sky astrophotographers.
